The Environment

We are all concerned about the environment. You can hardly turn on the T.V. or pick up a newspaper without hearing or reading about global warming and climate change. Global warming, a normally natural process, is being accelerated out of control by the increase of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

This increase is brought about by human activity: the fuel we burn to drive our cars and heat and light our homes. But we can do something about it. Each of us, be it individual or corporation, can take responsibility for their part. We can recycle, reduce and offset. Recycle what you can, reduce your carbon footprint and what you can't reduce, offset.

Life is about balance, isn't it time you balanced your carbon?

Why Carbon Offsets?

Ideally we would all reduce our carbon footprint (the amount of carbon and other greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere) by changing the way we live, work and play. Common steps include switching from fossil fuels to alternatives like biofuels, and using renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, and wave power.

But we know that it's not always possible to reduce our emissions all the way down to zero. That's where carbon offsets come in. Carbon offsets allow you to balance the carbon you emit by eliminating it somewhere else. In our case we do this by planting trees. For each ton of carbon you need to offset we will plant enough trees to offset that ton, letting you balance out what you cannot reduce.

How GroPower does it differently?

GroPower, like many other carbon offset providers, plants trees to provide the offsets. GroPower believes that helping the environment is one of the most important things we can do. We also believe that helping the environment, rather than being a burden can be a profitable endeavour.

GroPower uses Jatropha trees to offset the carbon. Jatropha trees differ from typical trees in that they produce a natural oil that can be converted into biodiesel. This biodiesel displaces ordinary diesel, meaning that for every liter of biodiesel used one liter of ordinary diesel is not used.

Because of this the carbon that would have been released from the diesel is not. This is important because the carbon released from the biodiesel when it is combusted is carbon that was already in the atmosphere and part of the existing carbon cycle.

On the other hand the carbon locked away in fossil fuels like diesel is carbon that is being newly introduced to the carbon cycle, adding to the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. By preventing the use of diesel by substituting biodiesel we are preventing more carbon from entering the atmosphere; generating an additional carbon offset.

GroPower sells the oil harvested from the trees to biodiesel refineries and we share those profits with you!

What are the Benefits

Personal offsets

  • Profitably balance out your carbon emissions to zero
  • Help fund the development of bio-fuels; helping potentially millions of cars break the petroleum addiction.
  • Help local communities in the developing world by facilitating the creation of a new industry and product in global demand.

If you're a business you also

  • Build good will with your customers and clients
  • Create a competitive advantage
