The Environment

We are all concerned about the environment. You can hardly turn on the T.V. or pick up a newspaper without hearing or reading about global warming and climate change. Global warming, a normally natural process, is being accelerated out of control by the increase of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

This increase is brought about by human activity: the fuel we burn to drive our cars and heat and light our homes. But we can do something about it. Each of us, be it individual or corporation, can take responsibility for their part. We can recycle, reduce and offset. Recycle what you can, reduce your carbon footprint and what you can't reduce, offset.

Life is about balance, isn't it time you balanced your carbon?

Why Carbon Offsets?

Ideally we would all reduce our carbon footprint (the amount of carbon and other greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere) by changing the way we live, work and play. Common steps include switching from fossil fuels to alternatives like biofuels, and using renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, and wave power.

But we know that it's not always possible to reduce our emissions all the way down to zero. That's where carbon offsets come in. Carbon offsets allow you to balance the carbon you emit by eliminating it somewhere else. In our case we do this by planting trees. For each ton of carbon you need to offset we will plant enough trees to offset that ton, letting you balance out what you cannot reduce.

How GroPower does it differently?

GroPower carbon offsets, unlike many other offset schemes, stem from real changes made at the grass roots levels. Our offsets make a solid and definable impact on the environment. But it doesnt end there! GroPower offsets deliver real change, real societal benefits and real economical benefits to the communities we are active in.

GroPower builds electric vehicles for public transport. Our vehicles, designed for short distance transport, replace vehicles known as 'Trikes' which are 2 and 4 stroke motorcycles with covered sidecars built to carry 4-5 people for trips ranging between .5 and 2.5 kilometers.

These Trikes are, more often than not, old, refurbished vehicles in poor repair. They are notorious polluters with 1 of these vehicles polluting as much as 5 mid sized sedans! These vehicles don't just contribute to global warming, they also pollute the air itself with harmful chemical and particulate matter contributing to smog and acid rain.

As if that wasn't enough, they are noisy and slow making them a nuisance in traffic. Adding insult to injury: the drivers of these trikes make at most $5-6 dollars a day. With the cost of gas increasing even that small amount of income is under threat.

Our replacement, called the Electric Eagle trike, is designed from the ground up for efficiency. Capable of safely and comfortably carrying 4 passengers plus a driver with Zero emissions and almost no noise. Best of all the electric trikes are cheaper to operate, allowing the drivers to take home as much as 40% more income every day.

So how does that translate into carbon offsets? The trikes we are replacing won't be on the road anymore. They won't be polluting anymore. The carbon they would have emitted has been replaced with silent purity.
